Rocks open season by edging Shallow Lake

SHALLOW LAKE – The Elora Rocks opened their 2019-20 Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey league season with a 3-2 victory over the Shallow Lake Crushers Friday night at the Shallow Lake and District Arena.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and the Rocks netted the lone goal of the second. Lyam Cripps scored the eventual game-winner with 6:47 to go in the third period to put Elora ahead 3-1. However, Shallow Lake scored just less than two minutes later to narrow the gap to its final one-goal margin.

Cripps collected two goals and an assist for the Rocks while Sam Bilton scored the other goal. Ed Gaffney, Brett Coverdale and Bilton each also had one assist.

Mackenzie Fleming scored both goals for Shallow Lake. Kody O’Connor, Brooks Nelthorpe and Josh Bumstead each had an assist.

Craig Byford picked up the win in net for the Rocks while Allan Manary took the loss for Shallow Lake.

Next up for the Rocks is their home opener Friday (Oct. 11) against the Milverton 4 Wheel Drives. Game time at the Elora and District Community Centre is 8:30 p.m.
