Rocks ride early flurry to win over Milverton

ELORA – The Elora Rocks connected for five goals in the first 11 minutes of the game, then withstood a comeback attempt by the Milverton Four Wheel Drives for a 7-5 win in Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey league play Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

The Rocks led 5-1 at the end of the first period and 5-3 after the second. Elora scored first in the third before Milverton netted a pair of goals to get the gap down to a single goal with more than eight minutes to play. The hosts completed the scoring with an empty-net goal with 32 seconds to play.

Elora received single goals from Sam Bilton, Spencer Gourlay, Spencer Cudney, Bradey Prosic, Brett Coverdale, Chad Herron and Ed Gaffney. Stevie Alvo assisted on two of the goals while single assists went to Santino di Florio, Gaffney, Herron, Prosic and Gourlay.

Evan Buehler and Brent Freeman scored twice apiece for Milverton while Greg Huszarik had the other goal. Andrew Brubacher and Dennis Dewar each had two assists and Freeman, Buehler and Carver Ormiston had one each.

The teams each took 36 shots on net and Milverton went 2-for-8 on its power play while the Rocks were scoreless on three power plays.

Craig Byford made 31 saves for the win in the Elora net. Alex Elliott started in goal for Milverton, but was relieved by Brayden Bruce after Elora’s third goal. Bruce went the rest of the way and he was tagged with the loss.

The Rocks climb to the .500 winning percentage mark with the win. They’re tied for eighth with an 8-8-1-0 record. The Rocks are tied with the Tavistock Royals (8-4-1-0), but Tavistock has four games in hand.

Milverton is 14th at 1-13-0-1.

Next game for the Rocks is Friday when they’re to host the Mapleton-Minto 81’s (9-5-2-1) at 8:30 p.m. at the Elora and District Community Centre.
