Rocks score five in a row en route to series sweep

ELORA – The Elora Rocks scored five consecutive goals on their way to sweeping their best-of-five WOSHL quarter-final playoff series with the Alvinston Killer Bees Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

The Rocks surrendered the opening goal of the game, but rallied to win 7-3 in the third game of the series.

Charlie Stephens started the five-goal run midway through the first period while Blaize Bridges scored the fifth goal of the streak in the eighth minute of the second period.

The defending champion Rocks won 2-1 at the end of the first period and 6-2 after the second.

Stephens hit for a pair of goals in the game while Zac McInall, Alex Uttley, Zack Cameron, Bridges and Spencer MacCormack added single goals for the Rocks. Brendan Woods gathered four assists while Cameron had three, Bridges had two and Stephens, Uttley, MacCormack, Chad Herron and Mike Giacometti each had one.

Kane Johnson tallied twice for Alvinston while Tye Johnson had the other goal. Matt Stevens picked up two assists while Carson Perry and Tyler Winquist each had one.

The Rocks controlled play as they outshot Alvinston 48-22, including a 17-4 advantage in the third period when the teams scored once apiece. Elora was scoreless on two power plays while the Killer Bees went 1-for-2.

Colin Dunne had 19 saves for the Rocks while Nolan DeKoning had 41 for Alvinston.

Elora had finished the regular season in second at 18-4-0-2 and were 25 points ahead of the seventh-place Killer Bees who were at 6-17-0-1.

The Rocks are the first team to win a quarter-final series this season.

Stratford Fighting Irish lead their series with the Erin Blitz 2-0 with Game 3 today at 4:30 p.m. at Stratford. If the Blitz win that match, Game 4 is to go at Erin’s Centre 2000 arena Sunday at 6 p.m.

Tilbury Bluebirds lead their series with the Plattsville Lakers 2-0 with Game 3 set for tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Tilbury. If Game 4 is needed, it’s to be played Sunday at Plattsville starting at 3:30 p.m.

Tillsonburg Thunder lead their series with the Strathroy Jets 2-1 with Game 4 slated to go Sunday at Strathroy starting at 12:30 p.m. If the series goes its five-game limit, the fifth game is scheduled to be played Tuesday at Tillsonburg starting at 8 p.m.
