Rocks stay alive as they halt Four Wheel Drives

ELORA – The Elora Rocks kept their Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey season going as they downed the Milverton Four Wheel Drives 8-5 at the Elora and District Community Centre Friday night.

Despite the loss, Milverton leads the best-of-seven A semifinal series 3-2.

The Rocks yielded the first goal of the game, but responded with three in a row to lead 3-1 at the end of the opening period. After Milverton narrowed the gap to 4-3, the Rocks scored another three in a row to take control. They led 7-5 at the end of the second.

Andrew Whalen had a hat trick for Elora while Klayton Hoelscher added a pair of goals and Brendan Farrugia and Brett Coverdale netted single goals. Lyam Kripps assisted on three of the goals while Trevor Lord had two assists and Kris Dobinson, Spencer Gourlay, Mark Rozak, Whalen, Farrugia, Brock West, Sam Bilton and Corey Flemington each had one.

Getting a goal apiece for Milverton were Chad Bauman, Colin Martin, Evan Buehler, Riley Conners and Liam Buckley. Mitchell Boertien had two assists and Greg Huszarik, Bauman, Dennis Dewar, Nick Criminisi and Buckley each had one assist.

The Rocks outshot Milverton 46-43. Colin Dunne had 38 saves for Elora while Brayden Bruce started in net for Milverton and made 22 saves before being relieved by Tim Bester after Elora’s seventh goal. Bester had 16 saves.

The teams are to contest the sixth game of the series Saturday at Milverton’s Perth East Recreation Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.
