Rocks swamped on own power play in Game 3 loss

FERGUS – Their own power play turned into a disadvantage for the Elora Rocks Friday night in WOSHL semifinal playoff action at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The Rocks yielded three shorthanded goals in a 4-2 loss to the Stratford Fighting Irish in Game 3 of the series. The Fighting Irish have won all three games played in the best-of-seven series.

The defending champion Rocks need to win each of the remaining games in the series to advance to this season’s WOSHL Cup championship series.

Friday, the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before Stratford scored two shorthanded goals in the second period to grab their two-goal advantage. The Rocks added a power-play goal in the third period to cut the gap to a single goal before the Fighting Irish completed the scoring 2:15 later with another shorthanded goal.

Zack Cameron scored both goals for the Rocks while Matteo Condotta, Brendan Woods and Charlie Stephens each had an assist.

Sean O’Brien, Ray Robbins, Cameron Stokes and Brody Smith had a goal apiece for Stratford. Dylan Buckholz picked up two assists while Stokes, Graham Brulotte and Cooper Leitch had one apiece.

Stratford outshot Elora 33-31, but was scoreless on two power plays while the Rocks went 1-for-4 on their power play.

Colin Dunne had 29 saves for the Rocks while Darren Smith had 29 for the Fighting Irish who have won six of the seven playoff games they’ve had this year.

Game 4 is set for Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at Stratford’s Allman Arena.

If the Rocks win Saturday, they’ll host Game 5 next Friday in Fergus starting at 8:30 p.m.

A win by Stratford Saturday will put the Fighting Irish into the championship series where they’ll face the winner of the other semifinal between the Tilbury Bluebirds and Tillsonburg Thunder. The Bluebirds lead the series 2-0 with Game 3 slated for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Tilbury.
