Rocks take A final opener in overtime

ELORA – The Elora Rocks wasted little time putting an end to overtime in the opening game of the Western Ontario Athletics Association senior men’s A championship final Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

Chad Herron fired home a shot from close in on the left side to give the Rocks a 4-3 victory over the Milverton Four-Wheel Drives at 3:08 of the extra period. The goal came on the only shot of the overtime.

The Rocks wasted even less time getting off the ice as they raced straight for the exit rather than celebrating on the ice.

The teams alternated goals throughout the match that was pretty lacklustre for the first two periods. The Rocks and Drives scored once apiece each period of regulation time and the hosts scored the first goal of the period each time.

Mason Noble, Ben Piluk, Henry McNeil and Herron tallied for the Rocks while Lyam Cripps assisted on all three regulation-time goals. Single assists were awarded to Corey Flemington, Sam Bilton and Shawn Lantz.

Brent Freeman had two goals and an assist for Milverton while Dennis Dewar had a goal and an assist. Evan Buehler set up two of the goals and Chris Eckert also had an assist.

Milverton’s special teams accounted for all of its goals as two were power-play markers and the other came with the Drives playing shorthanded.

The Rocks outshot Milverton 38-30 and went 1-for-6 on their power play while the Drives had five power plays.

Craig Byford had 27 saves in the Elora net while Brayden Bruce had 34 saves for Milverton.

The A playoffs are for teams that finished ninth or lower at the end of the regular season. The Rocks were 11th at 9-12-1-0 and Milverton was 12th at 3-17-1-1.

Elora took the two regular-season meetings between the teams as the Rocks won 7-4 at Milverton Nov. 17 and 7-5 at Elora Dec. 28.

Second game of the best-of-seven A final is slated for Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Milverton Arena.
