Rocks use goals in 2nd and 3rd to top Plattsville

PLATTSVILLE – Single goals in the second and third period proved to be the difference as the Elora Rocks defeated the Plattsville Lakers 5-3 in WOSHL play Sunday at the Plattsville Arena.

The teams were tied 3-3 at the end of the first period before the defending champion Rocks shot ahead with the lone goal of the second period and secured the win with the only goal of the third.

The Rocks never led until their second-period goal as the Lakers had scored the first two goals of the game in the first eight minutes of the match. The Rocks got those two back with a pair of goals 12 seconds apart midway through the period before Plattsville went ahead again with just over three minutes to go in the opening period. Elora tied it again with a power-play goal with 24 seconds to go in the first.

Steven Dol had two goals for the Rocks while Nick Tetley, Chad Herron and Zack Cameron also scored. Herron assisted on three of the goals while Spencer Gourlay, Andrew Brubacher, Dol and Alex Utley each had one assist.

Kevin Hu tallied twice for Plattsville while Luke Sinclair had the other goal. Jeff Zehr had a pair of assists while Hunter Dubecki, Mitch Randell and Brady Schmidt had one apiece.

Colin Dunne picked up the win in net for the Rocks with 53 saves.

Lane Timmons had 68 saves in the Plattsville net in the wide-open game as the teams combined for an average of more than two shots per minute.

The Rocks were 1-for-3 on their power play while Plattsville was scoreless on three power plays.

Elora and the Tilbury Bluebirds are tied for the league lead with 12 points apiece. The Rocks are at 6-0-0-0 and have a game in hand on the expansion Bluebirds who are at 6-1-0-0. They’re followed by the Tillsonburg Thunder (4-1-0-0), Strathroy Jets (4-2-0-0), Stratford Fighting Irish (2-2-0-0), Alvinston Killer Bees (1-3-0-1), Delhi Flames (1-5-0-0), Erin Blitz (0-4-0-0) and Plattsville (0-5-0-0).

The Rocks are to play Tillsonburg at the Tillsonburg Community Centre Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
