Ross and Orangeville to battle for field hockey title
GUELPH – The Ross Royals and Orangeville Bears, the teams that finished in the top two places at the completion of the regular season, are to meet in Wednesday’s District 4/10 high school girls’ field hockey final after both posted semifinal wins Monday at Varsity Field.
The first-place Royals defeated the fifth-place Centennial Spartans 3-0 while the second-place Bears edged the third-place Centre Wellington Falcons 1-0.
Ross scored once in the first half and twice in the second to oust the Spartans who had surprised the fourth-place Bishop Macdonell Celtics in the quarter-finals.
Leah Penner scored all three goals for Ross while Helena Born had the shutout.
The Bears scored their goal about midway through the second half for the win over Centre Wellington.
Ruby Dickinson scored the game’s lone goal.
Ross had finished atop the standings with a 7-0-0 record while Orangeville was second at 5-1-1.
The Royals defeated the Bears 1-0 last week at Varsity Field in the final game of the regular season for both teams. The goal came in the second half.
Wednesday’s final at Varsity Field is set for 3:30 p.m.
