Ross, GCVI to decide senior and junior rugby titles

GUELPH – It’ll be a Ross Royals-Guelph CVI Green Gaels championship doubleheader in District 4/10 high school boys’ rugby Thursday.

The Royals and the Gaels are to clash in both the senior and junior finals at the Guelph Lake Sports Fields.

The junior final is to start the championship doubleheader at 5:15 p.m. with the senior final following at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday’s winners advance to the CWOSSA AAA boys’ rugby championship tournaments at Kitchener next Tuesday and Thursday. Preliminary play is set for Tuesday and the CWOSSA finals are to be played next Thursday.

 

Senior Boys Rugby

Both the Royals and Gaels posted semifinal victories Tuesday with the Royals beating the Centre Wellington Falcons 29-5 and the Gaels blanking the Lourdes Crusaders 36-0.

Ross finished atop the standings at the completion of the regular season with a 6-0-0 record while GCVI was second at 5-1-0, Lourdes third at 4-2-0 and Centre Wellington fourth at 3-3-0.

Ross defeated GCVI 38-14 in their regular-season meeting May 15.

The Royals and Gaels have combined to win the last four league titles with Ross winning in 2022 and 2019 and GCVI winning in 2018 and 2017.

In all, Ross has won the league title 10 times since its inception in 1991 while GCVI has won it nine times.

Lourdes advances to be the league representative in the CWOSSA A/AA tournament at Shelburne next Tuesday.

 

Ross 29 Centre Wellington 5

Isaac Misener, Jacob Parkes, Ely Sutton, Tim Nixon and Luke Van Dam each scored a try for the Royals while Charlie Thurtell had two converts.

Centre Wellington’s scorer was unavailable.

 

Guelph CVI 36 Lourdes 0

Josei Yoshioka had a try and a convert for GCVI and Alex Zettel also collected seven points. Matt Robinson, Jack Partridge and Logan Cako each scored a try while Wares Heddokheel kicked two converts and Alexander Lukens had a penalty kick.

 

Junior Boys Rugby

The Royals and Gaels had one-sided semifinal victories Tuesday.

Ross defeated Centre Wellington 57-7 while GCVI dropped the Centre Dufferin Royals 54-0.

Ross was first at the end of the regular season at 4-0-0 and was followed by GCVI at 3-1-0, Centre Dufferin at 2-2-0 and Centre Wellington at 1-3-0.

Ross completed the regular season with a 32-12 victory over GCVI at Ross May 15.

Ross will be looking for its ninth consecutive league title and 20th overall while GCVI will be looking for its third and first since 2007.

Three A/AA teams from the 4 and 10 districts are to compete in the CWOSSA A/AA invitational tournament at Shelburne. Centre Dufferin and the Erin Raiders competed in the D4/10 league this year while Lourdes has entered a team in the CWOSSA tournament.

The Royals had nine tries in the match while the Falcons had one.

 

Guelph CVI 54 Lourdes 0

Bryson Cook struck for four tries for GCVI while Ben Chambo had two tries and Malin Hazl booted four converts. Griffin Wood and Carter Hashim each added a try while Alistair Chong had two converts and Ethan Gillespie added one convert.
