Ross Royals connect in second half for D10 title

GUELPH – The Ross Royals retained District 10 high school girls’ soccer honours Friday with a 4-0 victory over the Centennial Spartans at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The championship win was the second in a row for the Royals and their fourth in five seasons.

All four goals came in the second half of Friday’s match.

Greta Waller put the Royals ahead early in the second half with a lovely-placed shot and followed that up with her second goal of the game a few minutes later.

Mya Chin and Maya Payne added the other goals for Ross.

Centennial had finished the regular season in top spot with a 7-0-0 record while Ross was second at 6-1-0, the loss being a 2-1 setback to the Spartans on the opening day of the regular season April 27 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Ross advances to the CWOSSA AAA championship tournament Tuesday and Thursday at Kitchener’s RBJ Schlegel Park.

The Royals are to be in a pool with Assumption and Kitchener CI for pool play Tuesday. Top two in each of the two pools move on to the semifinals Thursday at 11 a.m. Semifinal winners are to meet in the championship match at 3 p.m.
