Ross Royals get consolation in rugby tournament

CLARINGTON – The Ross Royals leave the OFSAA provincial high school AAA girls’ rugby championship tournament as consolation champions.

The second-seed Royals dropped the eighth-seed Nantyr Shores Tritons of Innisfil 29-7 in the consolation final Wednesday at Courtice Secondary School.

Ross gained its berth in the match with a 22-17 win over 13th-seed I.E. Weldon Wildcats of Lindsay in the consolation semifinals at Clarington Fields earlier in the day.

Nantyr Shores advanced to the consolation final with a 40-5 triumph over fourth-seed Stouffville Spartans in the other consolation semifinal.

The fifth-seed Mayfield Mavericks of Caledon claimed the provincial honours by edging third-seed Glebe Gryphons of Ottawa 28-24 in the gold-medal match.

Top-seed Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils took the bronze-medal game 49-5 over the seventh-seed Uxbridge Tigers.
