Ross Royals rally from four-goal deficit to win in OT
GUELPH – The Ross Royals spotted the Norwell Varsity Reds a four-goal lead before coming back for a 5-4 win in overtime in District 4/10 high school boys’ hockey play Friday at the Victoria Road arena.
Norwell scored three times in the first period and added to their lead early in the second.
Ross picked up its first goal midway through the second and narrowed the gap to a single goal with a pair of goals 1:44 apart midway through the third. The Royals tied it with 1:50 to go in regulation time with goaltender Josh Dunbar on the bench in favour of an extra attacker.
The Royals won it with 1:13 to go in the four-on-four overtime period with a power-play goal.
Adam Nightengale had two goals, including the game-tying marker, and an assist for the Royals while Noah Van Dam had a goal and three assists. Chris Cabeldu scored the winner and also had an assist while Noah Sabourin had the other goal. Tyler Baxter had two assists and Adam Best one.
Tyler Franklin tallied twice for Norwell while Will Dennison had a goal and an assist and Brett Armstrong also had a goal. Griffen Jack had an assist.
Ross is second in the eight-team league with a 6-1-0-0 record while Norwell is third at 4-1-1-1. Centre Wellington Falcons lead at 6-1-0-1 but have played a game more than both Ross and Norwell.
The game completed pre-Christmas league play for the Royals while the Varsity Reds are to host the Centennial Spartans Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Palmerston arena.
