Ross Royals surprised, now focus on consolation final

CLARINGTON – The Ross Royals will hoping to gain a berth in the consolation final after splitting a pair of games in the OFSAA provincial high school AAA girls’ rugby championship tournament Tuesday.

The second-seed Royals were knocked out of the championship side of the draw with a 13-12 loss in the quarter-finals to the seventh-seed Uxbridge Tigers at Courtice Secondary School.

Ross rebounded from that loss to double the ninth-seed Blessed Cardinal Newman Knights of Scarborough 24-12 in the consolation quarter-final at the South Courtice Arena fields.

The Royals are to play the 13th-seed I.E. Weldon Wildcats of Lindsay in the consolation semifinals at Clarington Fields Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. for a spot in the consolation final at Courtice Secondary School against the winner of a consolation semifinal between fourth-seed Stouffville Spartans and eighth-seed Nantyr Shores Tritons of Innisfil.

The medal games are set as the fifth-seed Mayfield Mavericks of Caledon and third-seed Glebe Gryphons of Ottawa are to meet in the gold-medal match right after top-seed Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils and Uxbridge tangle in the bronze-medal game.
