Ross Royals to host Gaels in girls’ soccer final
GUELPH – The Guelph CVI Green Gaels and Ross Royals posted District 10 high school girls’ soccer semifinal victories Tuesday to gain berths in Friday’s final.
The third-place Gaels surprised the second-place St. James Lions with a 1-0 win at St. James while the first-place Royals downed the fourth-place Orangeville Bears 8-1 to earn the right to host Friday afternoon’s final.
Brook Hoyer, Emma Mussell and Greta Waller each scored twice for Ross while Mya Chin and Leah VanMilligen added single goals.
Ashley Mortson had the lone goal for Orangeville.
GCVI’s scorer was not reported.
Ross finished atop the eight-team league’s standings with a 6-0-1 record while GCVI was third at 4-2-1.
The teams met once in the regular season, on the opening day when the Royals prevailed 1-0 at Ross.
Both had semifinal victories last Thursday, Ross beating the Lourdes Crusaders 4-0 and GCVI downing the Bishop Macdonell Celtics 3-1.
Friday’s final at Ross is to start at 1 p.m.
The winner advances to the CWOSSA AAA tournament at Kitchener May 24 and 26.
St. James is to compete in the CWOSSA AA tournament at Brantford, also May 24 and 26.
