Ross seniors slip by Centennial, stay unbeaten

GUELPH – The Ross Royals remained unbeaten as they squeaked out a 10-7 win over the Centennial Spartans in District 4/10 high school senior boys’ rugby play at Ross Tuesday.

The game played during a steady rain was a close battle throughout and the Spartans threatened late. Such was the closeness of the game that a Centennial victory was denied on the final play of the match with a step out of bounds just feet from plunging over the line for a would-be final and winning try.

Cam Snook and Darren Kusinski each had a try for Ross.

Centennial’s scorers weren’t reported.

Ross leads the five-team league at 3-0-0 and 14 points while the Guelph CVI Green Gaels are second at 1-2-0 and six points. Both Centennial and the Centre Dufferin Royals have 1-1-0 records and five points while the Erin Raiders trail at 0-2-0 and no points.

Regular-season play is to wrap up next week with matches Monday and Wednesday.

Championship semifinals are set for May 16 and 17 with the championship match set for May 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Victoria Park in Fergus.
