Ross tops defending champs to open their season
GUELPH – The Ross Royals connected for three runs in the second inning on their way to their District 4/10 boys’ baseball season-opening 8-2 win over the defending champion Centennial Spartans.
In the second, Adam Nightingale singled, stole second and scored on Ethan Vivian’s single. Vivian and Griffin Busch, who hit a two-out single to score Vivian, would add the other Ross runs in the inning.
The Royals also scored two runs in the third, two more in the fourth and one in the sixth. Both of Centennial’s runs came in the second.
Justin Rochon, Devin Zigby and Vivian each had two hits for Ross while Noah Devine, Nightingale, Spencer Bertelsen and Busch had one apiece.
Zigby pitched the first four innings for the Royals while Vivian tossed the final three. They held Centennial to four hits.
Matt Cutten, Michael Guardiero, Oscar Koroiz and Ben Smith each had a hit for the Spartans.
The loss squared Centennial’s record at 1-1-0.
Bishop Macdonell 7 St. James 7
Both teams took turns in the lead, but neither could keep a grasp on it.
Bishop Mac led 5-0 after an inning and a half before the Lions struck for a run in the bottom of the second and six more in the third. However, the Celtics rallied for the tie with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
The Celtics had nine hits in the game – two each by Owen Sartor and Nick Deischner and one apiece by C.J. Baes, Matt Jansen, Mark Mitro, Ryan Doherty and Spencer Charlton.
The Lions had eight hits in the match as Aiden Edmonds, Hayden LeGrand and Ethan George each had two and Bryan Richardson and Lukas LeGrand had one apiece.
The stalemate left St. James at 1-0-1 and Bishop Mac at 0-1-1.

The result leaves Lourdes at 2-0-0 and Westside at 0-2-0.
