Royals clip Cardinals to square their records

HAMILTON – The Guelph Royals shot ahead early as usual and then ground it out to slip by the Hamilton Cardinals in Inter-County Baseball League play Sunday at Hamilton’s Bernie Arbour Stadium.

The Royals scored three runs in the top of the first inning, but were tied 3-3 after the second inning. However, they collected the game’s only runs scored after that with single runs in the third and fifth innings to claim the victory.

The deciding run was a solo homer by Justin Interisano to lead off the third.

In the fifth, Ricky Murray singled, went to second on an error and then scored on another error.

Edwin Javier was the winning pitcher as he tossed a complete game for the Royals, holding Hamilton to three earned runs off nine hits and five walks. He fanned five and threw 142 pitches.

Zackary Gonzalez took the loss for Hamilton. He yielded the five Guelph runs, four of them earned, off 10 hits and a walk in five innings. Ben Braun kept Guelph hitless during his stint of 2 2/3 innings while Wes Markle gave up a hit and a walk in 1/3 of an inning and Tanner Guindon surrendered two hits in the ninth inning. Braun and Guindon each had a strikeout.

Interisano and Darius Barlas each hit a double for the Royals in their 13-hit attack.

Justin Gideon hit a double for the Cardinals, the lone extra-base hit among Hamilton’s nine hits.

The Royals evened their record at 4-4 with the victory while Hamilton fell to 3-3.

The game was the third in Guelph’s string of seven games scheduled to be played in a stretch of 10 days.

The Royals are to host the Barrie Baycats (7-1) Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
