Royals collect their first win of season

BRANTFORD – The Guelph Royals struck for their first victory of the Intercounty Baseball League season as they took advantage of five errors by the Brantford Red Sox for a 7-2 victory at Anderson Stadium Sunday.

The Royals scored two unearned runs in the game and they never trailed. The Guelph side scored a single run in the first inning before the teams scored two apiece in the fifth. The Royals added another run in the seventh and their final three in the ninth.

Guelph’s Sean Reilly slugged the only homer of the game, a solo shot in the seventh.

Ethan Mohan swiped three bases and scored two runs although he didn’t register a hit. He reached base once when he was hit by a pitch and the other time when he walked.

Joel Espinal picked up the win for the Royals as he held Brantford to a single earned run off five hits and five walks in five innings. He had seven strikeouts.

Edwin Garcia pitched three innings and Jean Carlos Henriquez one and they kept Brantford hitless during their stints. Javier didn’t issue a walk and he struck out five while Henriquez walked one and struck out three.

The Royals touched Brantford starter and losing pitcher Victor Mueses for three earned runs off five hits and five walks in five innings. He struck out six.

The Royals are to have a three-in-three next weekend as they’re to play the London Majors at London’s Labatt Park Friday night, host the Hamilton Cardinals at Hastings Stadium Saturday at 1 p.m. and play the Toronto Male Leafs at Toronto’s Christie Pits Sunday afternoon.
