Royals connect in ninth to nip Brantford

BRANTFORD – Single runs in each of the final three innings Sunday gave the Guelph Royals their first victory of the Intercounty Baseball League season.

Those runs gave the Royals a 3-2 victory over the Brantford Red Sox at Brantford’s Anderson Stadium.

Brantford scored both of its runs in the eighth.

With the score tied 2-2, the Red Sox brought veteran Stefan Strecker in to pitch. Brendan Keys, the first Guelph batter Strecker faced, connected for a single before Toure Sinclair was struck by a pitch. Quinton Bent advanced the runners a base before Josh Garton was walked on four pitches to lead the bases. Sean Reilly hit into a fielder’s choice that brought Keys home with the winning run.

The Royals struck for 10 hits in the game, all singles. Reilly had three of them while Sinclair had two and Bent, Narciso Padilla, Jeff MacLeod, Darren Saunders and Keys had one apiece.

Ricky Murray had four singles for Brantford while seven other batters each had a hit.

Yunior Yambatis picked up the win. He held Brantford to two runs, one earned, off 11 hits and he didn’t walk anyone. He had five strikeouts. Mark Langille relieved in the eighth inning and pitched the final 1 2/3 innings. He didn’t give up a hit, walked one and struck out four.

Brantford used four pitchers – Euclides Leyer, Matt Betts, Tanner Guindon and Strecker – and they combined to yield three runs, all earned, off 10 hits and three walks with six strikeouts.

Both teams committed an error.

The result leaves the Royals at 1-2 while Brantford falls to 0-3.

The Royals are to host the Hamilton Cardinals (2-2) Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
