Royals edged by Leafs for third straight road loss

TORONTO – While the Guelph Royals are unbeaten at home this young Intercounty Baseball League season, but away from Hastings Stadium is another story.

The Royals lost their third consecutive road game Sunday when the Toronto Maple Leafs scored a run in the bottom of the 11th inning for a 4-3 victory at Christie Pits.

The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the regulation nine innings and the Royals took the lead for the first time in the game with a run in the top of the 10th. With Brando Leroux at second, J.D. Williams flied out to right field to move Leroux to third and then Conner Morro’s sacrifice fly to centre brought Leroux home.

Toronto got that run back in the bottom of the inning and added the winner in the 11th.

The Royals had seven hits in the game. Morro had a double, the team’s only extra-base hit of the game, a single and he also stole a base. Getting one single apiece were Williams, Justin Interisano, Claudio Custodio, Jeff MacLeod and Leroux.

All six of Toronto’s hits were singles – two by Dan Marra and one each by Jordan Castaldo, Aidan McAskie, Luca Boscarino and Glen Nurona.

Guelph starter Custodia had another solid outing as he pitched eight innings, yielded two runs (one earned) off four hits and four walks. He struck out 11.

Nelson Mercado relieved and took the loss. He pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up two runs, neither earned, off two hits and a walk. He had two strikeouts.

The Leafs used six pitchers in the game – Diego Dominguez (3 innings), Yusei Teraoka (3 innings), Sam Greene (1 inning), Zach Sloan (1 inning), Dustin Richardson (2 innings) and winner Adam Marra (1 inning). They combined to limit the Royals to three runs (two earned) off seven hits and two walks and they had seven strikeouts with none of the six getting more than two strikeouts.

The Royals are fourth in the eight-team league at 4-4 while the Leafs are fifth at 4-5. London Majors lead at 6-1 while the Welland Jackfish are at 7-2 and Barrie Baycats are at 5-4. Hamilton Cardinals and Kitchener Panthers are both at 2-4 and Brantford Red Sox are at 0-6.

The Royals are slated to play three games in four days this week as they’re to play the Jackfish at the Welland Stadium Thursday at 7:30 p.m., host Hamilton at Hastings Stadium Saturday at 1 p.m. and play the Baycats at Barrie’s Vintage Throne Stadium Sunday at 7 p.m.
