Royals end losing streak with ninth-inning run

GUELPH – Justin Interisano doubled to plate Sean Reilly with the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Guelph Royals slipped by the London Majors 5-4 in Intercounty Baseball League play Saturday night at Hastings Stadium.

The win put an end to Guelph’s three-game losing streak.

With one out, Reilly was sent to first when he was struck by a pitch from London’s Kelvin Pichardo. Interisano was the next batter up and he hit the first pitch sent his way into centre field for the double.

That hit made Ben Reid the winning pitcher. He held London scoreless and hitless in his stint of 1 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out two of the five batters he faced.

Yomar Concepcion had started for the Royals and went 7 2/3 innings, giving up four runs, two earned, off seven hits and three walks. He had seven strikeouts.

The ninth-inning run allowed the Royals recover from London’s three-run outburst in the top of the eighth that put the Majors ahead 4-2. Guelph tied it with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Adam Rossit scored the first run when Darius hit into a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded. Brendan Keys scored the other one on a wild pitch.

Pichardo took the loss as he gave up three runs, one earned, off one hit and two walks in 1 1/3 innings. Starter Owen Boon had allowed two runs off seven hits and three walks in seven innings. Boon had five strikeouts and Pichardo one.

Interisano led at the plate as he drove in two runs with his fourth homer of the season, a double and a single. Jeff MacLeod and Barlas each hit two singles while Matthew Pilarczyk had a single for Guelph’s other hit.

Jacen Nalesnik hit a double and single for London while Keith Kandel had a triple and Byron Reichstein, Evan Britt and Matt Hexter each hit a double.

The result leaves the Royals at 5-9 and the Majors at 9-5.

The Royals are to play the Toronto Maple Leafs (9-5) at Toronto’s Christie Pits Sunday at 2 p.m. The Leafs have won all three meetings between the teams this season.
