Royals get late runs for win over Brantford

GUELPH – This time it was the Guelph Royals who scored late to claim a victory in Intercounty Baseball League action at Hastings Stadium.

The Royals struck for four runs in the eighth inning to pull out a 9-5 victory over the Brantford Red Sox Saturday.

The Red Sox had made the most of the few hits they collected to lead 5-4 after five and a half innings. In the bottom of the inning, the Royals tied it as Riley Perks was walked, stole second, went to third on a single by Ethan Hammond and scored when Kyle Kush hit into a double play.

The next runs were Guelph’s winning runs in the eighth. Hammond scored on a David Mendham single and Mendham, Josh Garton and Kush all scored on a double by Angel Villalona.

The Royals recorded 13 hits in the match while Brantford had four. Perks smacked his second homer of the season to go with a double while Jeff MacLeod hit two doubles and Villalona had three singles to go with his double. Sean Reilly and Hammond each smacked two singles and Mendham hit one single.

Nic Burdett homered for Brantford while Chris Iltshishin hit a double and a single and Jacob Reid had one single.

Brett Lawson picked up the win in relief of Yunior Yambatis. Lawson yielded a hit and a walk in two innings after the Red Sox had scored all five of their runs, all earned, off Yambatis in seven innings. He gave up three hits and three walks and also had five strikeouts while Lawson had three.

Both Brantford starter Eddison Frias and reliever Victor Mueses surrendered four earned runs, while the Royals also scored an unearned run of Frias. Frias gave up nine hits and a walk and had nine strikeouts in six innings while Mueses took the loss as he yielded four hits and two walks in two innings. He also had two strikeouts.

The result leaves the Royals at 6-6 and Brantford at 1-8 as the Red Sox suffered their eighth consecutive loss.

The Royals are to play the Kitchener Panthers at Kitchener’s Jack Couch Park Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
