Royals held to three hits in loss to Toronto Maple Leafs

TORONTO – The Guelph Royals were limited to three hits as they were dropped 12-2 by the Toronto Maple Leafs in Intercounty Baseball League play Sunday at Christie Pits.

The Leafs shot ahead early with a single run in the first inning and two in the third and they slugged three homers in the game. They also added two four-run innings – the fifth and eighth – and had a run in the sixth.

The Royals collected single runs in the sixth and ninth innings and they also committed four errors in the game leading to three unearned runs.

Getting the hits for Guelph were J.D. Williams with a solo homer, Brando Leroux with a double and Tristan Pompey with a single.

Yomar Concepcion took the loss in his return to the Royals. He had posted a 3-4 record with 3.64 earned-run average for Guelph in the 2019 season. Sunday he allowed three runs, one earned, off three hits and two walks in four innings. He had four strikeouts.

Nelson Mercado yielded five earned runs off three hits and three walks in two innings. He had two strikeouts.

For the second game in a row, Yuki Narita retired all three batters he faced. He had a strikeout Sunday after he had struck out three in Friday’s 10-5 win over the Hamilton Cardinals at Hamilton.

Brandon Deans was touched for four runs, three earned, off two hits and two walks in the eighth inning. He had a strikeout.

Justin Marra, Johnathan Solazzo and Greg Carrington each hit a homer for Toronto as the Leafs connected for eight hits. Solazzo had three of those hits while Ryan Burnside had a double and Jose Vinicio and Jordan Castaldo each had a single.

Sam Greene picked up the win as he held the Royals hitless through five innings. He had six strikeouts and three walks.

Daniel Procopio and Julian Russell relieved. Procopio yielded an earned run off three hits and four walks in three inning ad he also had five strikeouts.

Russell pitched the ninth and gave up an earned run off a walk.

The result leaves the Royals at 1-1 and the Leafs at 3-1.

The Royals are to play the Welland Jackfish (0-2) at the Welland Stadium Thursday at 7:25 p.m. and host Welland Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
