Royals keep Brantford winless with 9 unearned runs

BRANTFORD – The Guelph Royals took advantage of four errors by the Brantford Red Sox for a 14-11 victory in an Intercounty Baseball League slugfest Friday night at Arnold Anderson Stadium.

Those Brantford errors led to a total of nine unearned runs by the Royals including all seven runs yielded by Brantford starter Garrett Larner in his 4 2/3 innings of work.

The fun began in the second inning after both teams went three-up three-down in the first. With two out and Justin Interisano on first after being walked, Darius Barlas hit a single to send Interisano to second. Brendan Keys reached first on an error by Brantford left fielder Roger Keen that allowed Interisano to score and move Barlas to third. Brando Leroux was walked before Dalton Pompey tripled to score three runs and then he’d score on a passed ball.

The Red Sox got some of the runs back on a three-run homer by Evan Ryan in the bottom of the inning and then pulled ahead with five runs in the bottom of the third when they sent 11 batters to the plate. It could’ve been more, but Brantford left the bases loaded. They scored the runs on four hits – three in a row – and two walks, both walks sending a runner across the plate.

The Royals scored two more unearned runs in the fifth when a two-out error by Brantford second baseman Jaret Lupton prolonged the inning.

Guelph went ahead with two more runs, these ones earned, in the sixth before the hosts pulled even with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

A two-run homer by Sean Reilly was included in Guelph’s four-run seventh while Brantford collected single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. The royals completed the scoring for the game with a run in the ninth.

Pompey hit a triple, double and single to drive in four runs while Interisano reached base five times on two singles and three walks. He knocked in two runs. Brendan Keys hit a double and single while Reilly had his homer and Ethan Hammond and Barlas each hit a single.

The third, fourth and fifth batters in Brantford’s order accounted for seven runs, nine hits and five RBIs. Nick Burdett, batting third, hit a homer and two singles while Liam Sutherland, batting fourth, hit a double and two singles and Spencer Jamieson, batting fifth, hit two doubles and a single. Jamieson had three RBIs while the other two had one apiece. Burdett had three runs and the other two had two each.

Of the other Brantford batters, Lupton hit a double and a single, Ryan stroked his homer and Jesse Fishbaum hit a single.

Lucas Barry started for the Royals. He yielded nine runs, all earned, off nine hits and six walks in 5 2/3 innings. He had nine strikeouts.

Ben Reid picked up the win in his 3 1/3 innings of relief. He gave up two earned runs off four hits and he had five strikeouts.

Larner gave up the seven unearned runs off four hits and seven walks while he also had three strikeouts.

Gabe Bruder (1/3 of an inning), Sean Hood-Tidman (1 1/3 innings) and Danny Howat (2 2/3 innings) also saw time on the mound. Bruder yielded two earned runs off one hit and one walk while Hood-Tidman surrendered four runs, two earned), off three hits and two walks and Howat gave up an earned run off two hits. Howat had four strikeouts and Hood-Tidman had one.

Guelph is fifth in the league at 9-7 while Brantford is eighth at 0-15.

The Royals are to host the seventh-place Hamilton Cardinals (4-10) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
