Royals nip Barrie to end losing streak

GUELPH – Adam Rossit clubbed a one-out single to right field to knock in Jeff MacLeod with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Guelph Royals put the brakes on their four-game Intercounty Baseball League losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Barrie Baycats Saturday at Hastings Stadium.

MacLeod, Guelph’s second batter of the inning, had clubbed a double to get into scoring position.

That run gave the Royals their only lead of the game. Barrie had scored two runs in the first inning and one in the second before the hosts pulled even with a three-run homer by Sean Reilly in the third.

Yunior Yambatis picked up the win for the Royals as he pitched the entire game, throwing 120 pitches, 70 for strikes. He gave up three earned runs off eight hits and three walks. He had five strikeouts.

Leadoff batter Rossit hit three singles for the Royals while Reilly had a single to go with his homer. MacLeod had his double and Darius Barlas and Justin Interisano hit one single apiece.

Reliever Jasprett Shergill took the loss for Barrie as he gave up the ninth-inning run. He yielded two hits in 1 1/3 innings. Matt St. Kitts started and pitched four innings before Adam Hawes took over for three innings. They combined to yield three earned runs off six hits and three walks and they had four strikeouts.

Kevin Atkinson, Brandon Dhue and Parker Walker each hit a double and single for Barrie.

The result leaves the Royals at 4-6 and Barrie at 5-6.

The Royals are to play the Kitchener Panthers (9-3) Sunday at 2 p.m. at Kitchener’s Jack Couch Park.
