Royals no-hit by Toronto as their season come to an end

TORONTO – The Guelph Royals were no-hit as their Intercounty Baseball League season came to an end Wednesday night at Dominico Field at Christie Pits.

The Royals did muster a pair of runs without the benefit of any hits as they were handed a 6-2 setback by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fifth and deciding game of their quarter-final playoff series. The Leafs took the series 3-2.

The Leafs scored a run in the third inning after Aaron Hornostaj and Connor Lewis hit back-to-back singles and, with one out, Justin Marra was intentionally walked to load the bases. Marcus Knecht grounded out, but Hornostaj scored.

Toronto got another run in the fourth when Garret Takamatsu doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Reeves.

The Royals pulled even in the top of the sixth when Darius Barlas was hit by a pitch. He was out at second as Ethan Mohan hit into a fielder’s choice. With two out, Sean Reilly was intentionally walked and Justin Interisano reached base on an error to load the bases. All moved up a base on a wild pitch before the bases were loaded again on an intentional walk to Angel Villalona. A wild pitch with Jon Waltenbury at the plate scored Reilly.

The Leafs went ahead for good in the bottom of the inning on a solo homer by Takamatsu.

Toronto added another run in the seventh and two in the eighth to complete the scoring.

Zach Sloan and Marek Deska combined for the no-hitter for the Leafs. Sloan was charged with the two runs, both unearned. He struck out seven and walked three in six innings while Deska had three strikeouts in the final three innings.

Yomar Concepcion took the loss as he gave up four runs, all earned, off eight hits and two walks in six innings. He had three strikeouts. Edwin Javier and David Hatt each pitched an inning in relief. Javier walked two in a hitless seventh while Hatt had a strikeout and gave up a hit in the eighth.

Hornostaj connected for three singles for Toronto while Takamatsu had a homer and a double and Knecht added a double and a single. Hitting one single apiece were Zac Orchard and Mike Reeves.

Toronto advances to play the Kitchener Panthers in the best-of-seven semifinals.
