GUELPH – The Guelph Royals celebrated Canada Day with a 15-5 thrashing of the Kitchener Panthers in Intercounty Baseball League play Friday afternoon at Hastings Stadium.

The Royals struck for 16 hits and they could’ve scored a lot more runs as they stranded 12 in the game as they collected their sixth consecutive victory.

Malik Collymore stole three bases for the hosts to increase his team-leading total to 11, but he’s a long way behind the 25 stolen by the league leader, Brandon Nicholson of the Welland Jackfish.

The Royals grabbed a lead they wouldn’t relinquish with a run in the first inning. They added two runs in the second and four in both the third and fourth innings. After Kitchener scored two in the top of the sixth, the Royals added three in the bottom of the inning before the Panthers negated those runs with three in the seventh. The hosts completed the scoring for the game with one more run in the eighth.

While the Royals scored 19 unearned runs last weekend, all of their Canada Day runs were earned. And they stranded 12 runners.

The Royals connected for 16 hits with Conner Morro hitting a double and two singles and Darius Barlas collecting three singles. Kyle Kush hit two doubles while J.D. Williams had a double, single and stolen base. Collymore collected two singles while Sean Reilly, Ethan Hammond, Ashton Patterson and Brendan Keys each had one single.

Jett Jarvis struck for two singles for Kitchener while Liam Wilson and Evyn Sherman each hit a homer. Stephen Whalen hit a triple, Blake Jacklin and Robbie Gauthier each hit a double and Dreyden Sloat had a single.

Emilis Guerrero picked up the win for the Royals as he held Kitchener scoreless through his five innings. He yielded two hits and walked two.

Lucas Barry relieved for three innings and surrendered all five earned runs by the Panthers off six hits and no walks. He had two strikeouts.

Ben Reid pitched an inning with two strikeouts.

Kitchener starter Kevin Millar was tagged with the loss as he gave up seven earned runs off seven hits and four walks in 2 2/3 innings. He had one strikeout.

Ted Brimblecombe (1 inning), Grant Shantz (1 1/3 innings), Jorden Carthy (1 inning), Matt McGovern (1 inning) and David Bruinsma (1 inning) also time on the mound in relief. They combined to yield eight earned runs off nine hits and four walks and had four strikeouts with none of them getting more than one strikeout.

The Royals are third in the eighth-team league at 12-7 while Kitchener is sixth at 7-12. Welland leads at 14-5 while the London Majors are second at 13-5. Toronto Maple Leafs are fourth at 11-8, Barrie Baycats fifth at 11-9, Hamilton Cardinals seventh at 6-12 and Brantford Red Sox eighth at 0-16.

The Royals are to complete the holiday weekend with a pair of games with the Leafs as the two teams are to play Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium and Sunday at 2 p.m. at Toronto’s Christie Pits.

Those games will make it three matches against the Leafs this week as the locals defeated Toronto 4-1 Tuesday at Hastings Stadium in a makeup game from the opening-game rainout May 21.
