Royals run away with win in OFSAA rugby opener

CLARINGTON – The second-seed Ross Royals opened the 16-team OFSAA provincial high school AAA girls’ rugby championship tournament with a victory Monday.

The District 4/10 and CWOSSA AAA champion Royals dropped the 15th-seed Blessed Trinity Thunder of Grimsby 57-0 at the South Courtice arena field to gain a berth in the tournament’s quarter-finals.

The Royals are to play the seventh-seed Uxbridge Tigers in a quarter-final match Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Courtice Secondary School.

Winner of that game advances to the 3 p.m. semifinal at Oshawa’s Eastdale Collegiate where they’ll play the winner of a quarter-final between the third-seed Glebe Gryphons of Ottawa and sixth-seed Pickering Trojans.

The gold-medal match is slated for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Clarington Fields while the bronze-medal match is to go at 10:30 a.m.
