Royals, Spartans stay undefeated in senior hoops

GUELPH – And then there were two.

The Ross Royals and Centennial Spartans stand as the undefeated squads in the District 10 high school senior boys’ basketball loop as both downed previously-unbeaten teams Tuesday.

The Royals outlasted the Lourdes Crusaders 76-70 at Lourdes while the Spartans downed the Bishop Macdonell Celtics at Centennial.

The Crusaders held a slim 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter before Ross rallied to shoot ahead 36-25 by halftime. However, the Crusaders didn’t fold as they came back in the third quarter, a quarter that saw the teams exchange the lead a few times before Ross settled in for a 58-54 lead at the end of the quarter.

The score was tied with just over two minutes to go in the game and the Royals were up by two with a minute to play. Ross added to its lead in the final minute as Lourdes was forced to take fouls in an attempt to regain possession of the basketball.

The teams combined for 15 three-pointers in the match with all but four coming in the second half.

Landon Hart led Ross with a 31-point outing while Robert Vosper netted 19 and Eric Dewar had eight. Hart sank five three-pointers while Vosper hit three.

Joey Basciano had three three-pointers in his 29-point total for Lourdes. Simon Porcellato collected 24 points and Dom Favaro picked up six.

 

Centennial 61 Bishop Macdonell 39

Jaylen Phillip hit for 25 points for Centennial while Yinka Ogunnote had 12 and Thomas Everitt added eight.

Ben Pigozzo had 21 for Bishop Mac and Nathan Visentin had six.

 

Guelph CVI 70 St. James 68

Dennis Magnaye led GCVI with 16 points while N. Brown gathered 14.

Caleb Holman had 19 points for St. James while Brady Valeriote followed with 11.

 

Orangeville 46 Centre Wellington 43

Zajac struck for 21 points for Orangeville.

Zach Taylor collected 12 points for Centre Wellington while Na’yl Heeralall had 11.

 

Junior Boys’ Basketball

Bishop Macdonell 46 Centennial 41

Tyson Hamilton hit for 16 points for Bishop Mac while Brandon Nguyen followed with 13.

Steph Batibeki led Centennial with 13 while Karan Hira had six.

 

Ross 56 Lourdes 36

Cohen Wesley had 18 points for Ross.

Josh Skelhorn netted 16 for Lourdes.

 

Orangeville 72 Centre Wellington 33

Bracken and C. Woods each had 12 points for Orangeville.

Giles had eight for Centre Wellington.

 

Guelph CVI 68 St. James 61

GCVI had three players hit double digits in scoring — M. Mwangi with 19 points, J. Krell with 15 and S. Singh with 14.

Gian dela Fuente connected for 14 for St. James while Peyton Cummings chipped in with 10.
