Royals tumble to Brantford Red Sox

BRANTFORD – Single runs in the fifth and seventh innings lifted the Brantford Red Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Guelph Royals in Intercounty Baseball League play Friday night at Arnold Anderson Stadium.

The hosts had opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning and the Royals responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Brantford went ahead for good with a run in the bottom of the fifth and added an insurance run in the seventh.

Back-to-back singles by Ethan Mohan and Darius Barlas and a Brantford error that allowed Sean Reilly to reach first sent Mohan home with Guelph’s first run. Justin Interisano followed with a sacrifice fly to score Barlas with the other run.

In the bottom of the inning, Andris Rizquez was walked, stole second and went to third on a balk before scoring on Guelph’s second error of the inning.

Liam Hicks connected for a double and a single for the Royals while Mohan hit two singles. Belting one single each were Barlas, Reilly and Brendan Keys.

Wilson Soriano hit two singles for Brantford while David Mendham, DeAndre Asbury-Heath, Daniel Jagdeo, Andris Rizquez and Anthony Rizquez each had one single.

Yunior Yambatis pitched the entire game for the Royals. He gave up four runs, two earned, off eight hits and three walks and he struck out 10.

The Red Sox used five pitchers. Starter Matt Martinow yielded two unearned runs off seven hits and a walk in five innings. He had five strikeouts. Michael Bucci, Matt Betts, Stefan Strecker and Tyler Gillies saw time on the mound in relief and they combined to hold the Royals scoreless and hitless in the final four innings. Bucci walked a pair and had a strikeout while Gillies had three strikeouts and Strecker had one.

The Royals were short-staffed as pitcher Ben Reid played in right field and hit ninth in the order.

With the win Brantford moves to 10-12, good for fifth in the league, while the Royals are seventh at 8-18 after they suffered their third consecutive loss and their fifth in a row on the road.
