Ryerson snaps Gryphon volleyball men’s win streak

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons saw their five-match winning streak in OUA men’s volleyball play come to an end Saturday as they were edged 3-2 by the Ryerson Rams at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The match was a close affair with the winner in three of the sets needing more than 25 points for the victory and no set was won by more than three points.

Ryerson took the first two sets 33-31 and 26-24 before the Gryphs battled back with 25-23 and 26-24 wins. The Rams took the match with a 15-12 victory in the fifth set.

Ryerson had a .230 kill percentage with 30 kills while the Gryphs were at .222 with 29 kills. Ryerson had seven aces, one more than the Gryphs and 47 digs, four more than the Gryphs, and both teams had 24 blocks.

Zarko Ubiparip had 19 kills, an ace, seven digs and three blocks for the Gryphs while Jakson Paterson had 13 kills, an ace, a dig and eight blocks and Zach Newman had 11 kills, two aces, five digs and four blocks.

Xander Ketrzynski had 33 kills, an ace, seven digs and three blocks for Ryerson while Sean Shultis had 11 kills, an ace, five digs and four blocks and Omari Young had seven kills, an ace, two digs and six blocks.

The loss leaves the Gryphs at 8-5 while the win lifts Ryerson to 12-5.

The Gryphs are fourth in the West Division and they’re to play the fifth-place Waterloo Warriors (5-8) at Waterloo Sunday afternoon. Top four qualify for the playoffs.
