Samorukov hat trick powers Storm to shutout win
SAGINAW – The Guelph Storm has survived to play again.
Defenceman Dmitri Samorukov and forward Nick Suzuki were involved in every Guelph goal as the Storm blanked the Saginaw Spirit 4-0 Friday night at Saginaw’s Dow Event Center to cut Saginaw’s lead in the Ontario Hockey League’s best-of-seven Western Conference final to 3-2.
Samorukov scored three of the goals and he assisted on the other one scored by Isaac Ratcliffe. Suzuki assisted on all four goals while Ratcliffe and Sean Durzi each had one assist.
Anthony Popovich stopped all 20 shots fired his way for the shutout and he really didn’t see much action after the first period. The Storm outshot the Spirit 43-20 including a 31-8 margin after the first 20 minutes of play.
Rookie netminder Tristan Lennox had 39 saves for Saginaw.
The Storm went 1-for-3 on its power play and held Saginaw scoreless on its two power plays.
The game was scoreless after the first period before the Storm scored three times in the second.
Sixth game of the series is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
