Saugeen Shores jumps ahead early in win over Minto 81’s

PALMERSTON – Three goals in the first period sparked the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks to a 5-2 victory over the Minto 81’s in WOAA senior men’s hockey play Saturday night at the Palmerston arena.

Saugeen Shores led 3-1 at the end of the first period after firing their first two goals home just over two minutes apart before the game was eight minutes old. The Winterhawks extended their lead with the lone goal of the second period.

Tyler Harriso and Jamison Buck had a goal apiece for the 81’s while assists were registered by Austin Gaboury, Zach Graham and Adam Kawawlec.

Trent Hawke tallied twice for Saugeen Shores while single goals were added by James McHaig, Curtis Johnston and Connor Patton. Johnston had two assists while Michael Johnstone, Brent MacDermid, Josh Hopkin and Lauchlin Elder each had one.

Ben Nelson took the loss in net for Minto while Jeff Flagler had the win for Saugeen Shores.

Neither team recorded a power-play goal in the game. The 81’s had six power plays and the Winterhawks had three.

The result leaves Saugeen Shores at 8-1-0 and Minto at 1-7-0.

The 81’s have a three-in-three next weekend as they’re to play the Milverton 4-Wheel Drives (3-4-0-3) at the Perth East Recreation Complex Friday at 8:30 p.m. before hosting the Shelburne Muskies (9-1-0-0) Saturday at the Palmerston arena at 8 p.m. and hosting the Lucknow Lancers (1-6-0-2) at Palmerston Dec. 1 at 2 p.m.
