Scoring spree in second lifts Patriots to win

MOUNT FOREST – Five goals in the second period proved to be the difference in the game as the Mount Forest Patriots dropped the Walkerton Hawks 7-2 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The teams scored a goal apiece in both the first and third periods, but it was Mount Forest’s five-goal second that won it for the hosts.

Michael Stefanelli and Lucas Fraulin each scored twice for Mount Forest while Brody Leblanc, Jacob Miller and Jack Birkett contributed single goals. Troy Weber assisted on three of the goals while single assists went to Birkett, Ryley Cribbin, Leblanc, Parker Miller, Derek Williams, Dylan Brown, Jack Francis, Thomas Haffner and Stefanelli.

Thomas Brown and Brady Stewart tallied for Walkerton and Noah Rouse had an assist.

Fraulin, who had five goals in 31 games of Tier 2 junior hockey in Western Canada a couple of years ago, has five points in two games and Jacob Miller, a one-time member of the Guelph Hurricanes, has five points in three games with the Patriots.

Mount Forest outshot Walkerton 38-14 after the first period for a 48-36 margin overall. The Patriots were also 1-for-2 on their power play and Walkerton was scoreless on two power plays.

David Lobsinger picked up the win for the Patriots with 34 saves. Matthew Donnelly started in net for Walkerton and he took the loss. Donnelly took the loss for Walkerton and he made 26 saves in two periods and Tyler Jackman had 15 saves in the third period.

The Patriots (29-9-1-0) are second in the Pollock Division while the Wingham Ironmen (31-6-2-1) lead and Walkerton Hawks are fifth at 12-21-3-4.

Mount Forest has three games left in its regular season next weekend as the Patriots are to host Wingham Friday at 8:30 p.m. and the Mitchell Hawks Saturday at 8 p.m. and play the Ironmen at Wingham Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
