Second-period goals lead to loss for Shamrocks

WELLESLEY – The Hespeler Shamrocks yielded three consecutive goals in the second period as they were handed a 5-2 setback by the Wellesley Applejacks in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Wellesley Community Centre.

Wellesley’s three-goal outburst in the middle stanza broke a scoreless tie.

The Shamrocks came back with two goals of their own later in the second, but the Applejacks negated that with two more goals in the third.

Tommy Zufelt and Josh Houston scored the goals for the Shamrocks while Braeden Tyler, Tony Tikel and Owen Fischer each had an assist.

Connor Doerbecker tallied twice for Wellesley while single goals were netted by Isiah Katsube, Anthony Pede and Justin Zuber. Single assists were awarded to Brett Allen, Pede, Kobe Seiling, Doerbecker, Curtis Butler, Austin Stemmler and Austin Cousineau.

The Applejacks outshot the Shamrocks 44-21 and went 2-for-5 on their power play while Hespeler went 1-for-4.

Joseph Clark was tagged with the loss in the Hespeler goal. He had 39 saves while winning netminder Will Crump of the Applejacks had 19 saves.

Wellesley (9-2-0-0) and Tavistock Braves (9-3-0-0) are tied atop the Doherty Division while the New Hamburg Firebirds are third at 8-2-1-0, Woodstock Navy Vets fourth at 7-1-2-0 and Hespeler fifth at 3-7-0-0. Norwich Merchants (2-9-0-1) and Burford Bulldogs (0-10-1-1) trail in sixth and seventh respectively.

The Shamrocks are to host Woodstock Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.
