Second-period goals lift 81’s by Shallow Lake

PALMERSTON – The Minto 81’s struck for three goals in the second period as they slipped by the Shallow Lake Crushers in Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey play Friday night at the Palmerston arena.

Shallow Lake hit for the first two goals of the game and held a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period before the 81’s connected for their second-period goals to lead 4-2 at the end of the period. The Crushers narrowed the gap to the final single-goal margin when they scored with just over five minutes to go in the game.

Zach Graham and Adam Kawawlec each had two goals and two assists for Minto while Wade Pfeffer assisted on three of the goals and Jamison Buck had one assist.

Mackenzie Fleming, Jesse Bedard and Corey Schnurr collected single goals for Shallow Lake while single assists were awarded to Reid Simmons, Tyler Cunningham, Justin McCrae, Daniel Zweep, Skylar Robertson and Jasper Akewenzie.

Marc Williams picked up the win in net for the 81’s while Jake Ireland was between the pipes for Shallow Lake.

The win lifts Minto into eighth place in the 14-team league with a 8-7-0-1 record. Shallow Lake is 13th at 2-15-0-0.

The 81’s are to be back on the ice at the Palmerston arena Saturday when they’re to host the 10th-place Elora Rocks (7-8-0-1). Game time is 8 p.m.
