Second-period outburst helps Mohawks sweep homestand

FERGUS – The Elora Mohawks connected for 10 goals in the second period on their way to a 16-4 victory over the Point Edward Pacers in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Sunday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The Pacers opened the scoring in the game and were tied 1-1 with the Mohawks at the end of the opening period before the Elora squad took control in the second period. Their 10-goal output in the period included seven consecutive goals in a span of 4:47 that started just past the midway point of the period.

The hosts led 11-3 at the end of the period and added five straight goals in the third before Point Edward completed the scoring in the game with 2:15 to go.

Brinley Wilson hit for five goals and four assists to move to the top of the league’s scoring leaders table with 18 goals and 21 assists in six games. JJ Lavigne (8 goals-19 assists) in seventh and Tobias Wilson (10 goals-16 assists) tied for eighth are also in the top 10 in scoring.

Carter Coffey, Keegan Detweiler and Connor Willmets scored twice apiece against Point Edwards while single goals were added by Lavigne, Brock Redwood, Tobias Wilson, Aidan McDougall and Trae Verbeek. Tobias Wilson also collected four assists while Redwood and Detweiler had three apiece, Lavigne and Terrance Barrina and Coffey, McDougall, Owen Williams, Willmets, Curtis Dietrich and Spencer Aitchison gathered one apiece.

Zack Snider had two goals and an assist for the Pacers while Brett Vince had a goal and two assists and Konnor Adams had a goal and an assist. Mason Brown also had two assists and goalkeeper Austin Dalgety had one.

Point Edward had 16 players suited up for the game including both netminders while the Mohawks had 20.

Elora outshot Point Edward 83-32 and went 2-for-5 on its power play while the Pacers were scoreless on three power plays.

Xavier Demichele had 28 saves for the Mohawks while Dalgety had 67 for Point Edward.

The Mohawks (5-1-0) and Guelph Regals (5-2-0) are tied for second in the Western Conference behind the Six Nations Rebels (6-0-0). Point Edward (0-6-0) and the Welland Generals (0-7-0) are tied for 11th.

The game was the fourth consecutive home game for the Mohawks and they won all four.

Next up is a pair of road games this week as they’re to play the Hamilton Bengals (4-1-0) Thursday at Hamilton’s Andreychuk arena starting at 8 p.m. and they’re to play the Wallaceburg Red Devils (1-3-0) at the Wallaceburg Memorial Arena Saturday at 7 p.m.
