Second-period outburst helps Patriots rally for victory
MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots potted four goals in four and a half minutes in the second period as they rebounded from a three-goal deficit to down the Hanover Barons 7-5 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
Hanover led 3-1 after the first period and the Barons scored the first goal of the second before Mount Forest’s flurry put the Patriots ahead 5-4 by the end of the second. Hanover tied it in the opening minute of the third before a power-play goal by the hosts and an empty-netter gave the Patriots the win.
Ryley Cribbin scored twice for the Patriots while single goals were netted by Blair Butchart, Derek Williams, Hayden Coulter, Jack Birkett and Michael Stefanelli. Cribbin, Butchart and Nathan Bolger each had two assists while Birkett, Coulter, Parker Miller, Owen Rahn, Matthew Weiler, Chet Philips and Troy Weber collected one apiece.
Hanover received goals from Tyson Lina, Zack Cameron, Ryan Marriage, Luke Hoelscher and Noah Johnson while assists went to Bryan Richardson, Brock Phillips, Lina, Cameron and Tyler Hooker.
The Patriots outshot the Barons 43-39 and both teams were 50 per cent on their power play – Hanover going 1-for-2 and Mount Forest going 2-for-4.
Mount Forest is second in the Pollock Division at 16-3-1-0, but hold three games in hand on the leading Wingham Ironmen (16-5-1-1). Hanover is fourth at 12-8-0-1.
The Patriots have a pair of road games next weekend as they’re to play the Kincardine Bulldogs (fifth at 11-9-0-1) at Kincardine’s Davidson Centre Arena Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and the Goderich Flyers (seventh at 2-18-1-0) at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Complex Dec. 1 at 2:30 p.m.
