
Second-period scoring spree powers Mohawks in season opener
POINT EDWARD – The Elora Mohawks struck for 11 goals in the second period as they opened their Ontario junior B lacrosse season with a 22-4 drubbing of the Point Edwards Pacers Sunday afternoon at the Point Edward arena.
The Mohawks scored six power-play goals in the victory over the Pacers who had also been dropped 21-9 by the expansion Cambridge Highlanders at home Saturday night.

The Mohawks led 3-2 after the first period Sunday and 14-3 after the second. They scored 12 consecutive goals in a run that started at 11:14 of the second and finished at 18:57 of the third. That run started with four goals in 69 seconds.
JJ Lavigne connected for three goals and eight assists for the Mohawks while the Wilsons, Tobias and Brinley, each had three goals and five assists. Evan McDougall had two goals and six assists while Carter Coffey had four goals and three assists, Jabe Verbeek had three goals and three assists, Nate Renaud had two goals and four assists, Adam McDougall had a goal and an assist, Trae Verbeek had a goal and Owen Tovell, Brock Redwood, Ryan McDougall and goalkeeper Sam Forbes each had one assist.
Zack Snider had two goals for Point Edward while Josh Manning and Konnor Adams had one apiece. Brett Vince and Jaxon Lucas had two assists apiece while Kaden Smith had one assist.
The Mohawks doubled the Pacers on shots on goal at 68-34 and Elora went 6-for-12 on its power play while Point Edwards was scoreless on four power plays. The Pacers were called for 52 minutes in penalties including two game misconducts while the Mohawks took 16 minutes.
Forbes had 30 saves to get the win in net for Elora while Austin Dalgety took the loss for Point Edwards. He yielded 13 goals in the first 31:56 while Aidan Foster surrendered nine goals in the final 28:04.
The Mohawks (1-0-0) are to play the Six Nations Rebels (2-0-0) at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Hagersville Friday at 8 p.m. and host the Welland Generals (0-2-0) in their home opener Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex in Fergus. Sunday’s game is to be the first of four consecutive home games for the Mohawks.
