Senior Gaels and junior Royals capture D10 volleyball titles

GUELPH – The Guelph CVI Green Gaels captured their third consecutive District 10 high school senior girls’ volleyball title Thursday night when they swept the Bishop Macdonell Celtics 3-0.

This season the Gaels took a little different path to the championship win as they had finished fifth after breaking even during the regular season. They entered the playoffs with a 7-7 record, but knocked off the fourth-place St. James Lions (8-6) in the quarter-finals and the first-place Ross Royals (13-1) in the semifinals before disposing of the second-place Celtics (12-2) in the final.

GCVI had finished first in the 2018-19 season with a 12-1 record and they’d also been first in 2017-18 with a perfect 14-0 campaign.

This year the Gaels defeated Bishop Mac 25-10, 25-22, 25-22 in the final.

The Gaels move on to next week’s CWOSSA AAA championship tournament Thursday at the University of Waterloo and Kitchener’s Forest Heights CI.

Bishop Mac is to play in the CWOSSA AA tournament at Norwell DSS in Palmerston Wednesday.

Junior

The Ross Royals extended their win streak to eight games as they swept the Guelph CVI Green 3-0 in the junior final.

The Royals won 30-28, 25-16, 25-11.

The championship win kept a trend going for the Royals as they’ve won the title every other year since 2016 as they also won in 2018 and now 2020. It was also the fourth title win since 2010 for the Royals as they won in 2013.

Ross moves on to the CWOSSA AAA tournament set for Thursday at the University of Waterloo and Kitchener’s Forest Heights CI.
