
Senior Spartans clinch top spot in D10 girls hoops
GUELPH – The Centennial Spartans clinched a playoff berth, securing a first-place finish in the District 10 high school senior girls basketball league in the process, as they dropped the Guelph CVI Green Gaels 61-20 Tuesday at Centennial.
Both teams entered the match unbeaten, but Centennial used its defence to keep the Gaels at bay in the first half until its offence started to click in the second half.
The Spartans led 11-2 at the end of the first quarter, 20-11 at halftime and 43-18 after the third quarter.
Jocelyn Newby led Centennial with 14 points and was one of four Spartans in double digits in scoring. Bodhana Sivagurunathan had 13, Kayla Hooper 12 and Jada Beuttenmiller 10.
Nicole Carbone led GCVI with six points while Nyssa Matthews had five.
GCVI’s Acadia Tremain was out with a leg injury. She had averaged just under 15 points per game through the Gaels’ first three games.
The Spartans are the lone team to have secured a playoff berth and none of the other six have been mathematically eliminated.
There are two game days left in the regular season (Thursday and next Tuesday) and the playoffs are to begin with the semifinals Dec. 9. Championship game is to go Dec. 14.
St. James 38 Ross 34
St. James moved into a tie for second with the win. Elivia Garbuio led the Lions with 16 points while Lilly Offen and Eva Wenger each netted seven.
Daniella Centurione had 10 for Ross while Devin Eddy followed with eight.
Orangeville 42 Lourdes 31
The Bears won the battle of the winless squads. Miller had 19 points for Orangeville and Williamson had 10.
Ashley Pallaya collected 10 for Lourdes.

Guelph CVI Green Gaels and Orangeville Bears secured playoff berths with their wins Tuesday.
Centre Wellington Falcons are the lone team out of the playoff reckoning as they’ll lose any tiebreaker they might be part of at the end of the regular season.
Playoffs are to begin with the semifinals Dec. 9. Championship game is to be played Dec. 14.
Guelph CVI 31 Centennial 28
The Green Gaels used their free-throw shooting to grab the win in the close match.
Guelph CVI had led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter and 18-11 at halftime before Centennial rallied to tie it 19-19 by the end of the third quarter.
The Gaels scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, eight on free throws.
Sam Aljoe led GCVI with 10 points while Phoebe James contributed nine.
Jenna Davey had nine for Centennial and Sophia Frank added five.
Orangeville 50 Lourdes 37
The Bears received 29 points from Firth and 15 from Miller in the win.
Liv Doucette had 15 for Lourdes while Mckenna Codrington chipped in with 14.
Bishop Macdonell 62 Centre Wellington 18
Nicole Mija and Sydney Richardson each scored 15 points for Bishop Mac.
Abra had six for Centre Wellington and Rachel Pegg gathered two.
Ross 44 St. James 23
Leah Van Milligen sparked Ross with a 14-point outing while Sierra Curvan netted 11.
Arielle Balmelero gathered 11 for St. James.
