Shamrocks clip Burford for another victory on home ice

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks made it two consecutive Provincial Junior Hockey League victories at home with a 5-2 win over the Burford Bulldogs Sunday afternoon.

The Shamrocks had beaten the Norwich Merchants 6-4 on home ice a week earlier.

Sunday, the Shamrocks yielded the opening goal of the game before responding with four consecutive goals. They led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 4-2 after the second.

Owen Fischer finished with two goals and two assists for Hespeler while Josh Houston, Tommy Zufelt and Callum Harvey each scored a goal. Andrew Fulton and Houston each had two assists while Matthew Hayward and Zufelt had one each.

Frankie Varga and Derick Da Silva scored for Burford with assists going to Thomas Morgan, Aidan Milne and Kyle Parsons.

Burford outshot the Shamrocks 32-31 while Hespeler collected a pair of power-play goals.

Joseph Clark collected the win in net for the Shamrocks. He had 30 saves while Caleb Ursu had 26 saves in the loss for Burford.

The Shamrocks are fifth in the Doherty Division at 3-6-0-0 while Burford is seventh at 0-9-0-1. Woodstock Navy Vets lead at 7-0-2-0 while New Hamburg Firebirds are second at 7-1-1-0, Wellesley Applejacks third at 7-2-0-0, Tavistock Braves fourth at 7-3-0-0 and Norwich sixth at 1-8-0-1.

The Shamrocks have a pair of games next weekend as they’re to play the Applejacks at Wellesley Saturday at 7:45 p.m. and host Woodstock Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
