Shamrocks double Dunnville for first win since October

DUNNVILLE – A pair of goals just over two minutes apart late in the first period pushed the Hespeler Shamrocks into a lead they wouldn’t relinquish in a 4-2 victory over the Dunnville Mudcats in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Dunnville Memorial Arena.

It was Hespeler’s first win since a 4-3 victory in overtime over the Port Dover Sailors Oct. 27. It was the first time the Shamrocks had scored more than two goals in a game since a 4-4 tie with the Hagersville Hawks Nov. 24 and the fifth time this season they’d scored their season high of four goals in a game.

The result evened the season series between the Shamrocks and Mudcats at three wins apiece. Dunnville leads the series, though, as one of their losses was in overtime.

Kyle Wagner scored twice for the Shamrocks while Matthew Tonner and Joseph Tabet added single goals. Assists were awarded to David Biro with two and Devin Schneider, Matthew Tonner, Anthony Zakhary, Robert Colton and Ryan Frost with one apiece.

Damian Garbutt and Joshua Phibbs scored for Dunnville while Matt Dolan assisted on both goals. Phibbs and Mason Ash each had one assist.

The Shamrocks outshot Dunnville 34-24. Hespeler was scoreless on its two power plays while Dunnville went 1-for-2.

Gavin MacLeod was the winning netminder for the Shamrocks and Jesse Schoeman was tagged with the loss in net for Dunnville.

Hespeler is eighth in the Bloomfield Division at 5-23-1-1 while Dunnville is seventh at 7-18-1-3.

The Shamrocks are to play Hagersville (14-13-2-2) at the Hagersville Arena Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
