Shamrocks edged by Glanbrook in possible playoff preview

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks surrendered a goal in each period as they were handed a 3-0 setback by the division-leading Glanbrook Rangers in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

Connor McQuhae, Jacob Buch and Elijah Nurse (into an empty net with 26 seconds to go) collected the goals for Glanbrook. Connor King assisted on two of the goals while Mathew Rimac had a single assist.

Glanbrook outshot the Shamrocks 50-33 while the Rangers were 0-for-5 on their power play and Hespeler was 0-for-3.

Chris Brady picked up the shutout win in the Glanbrook net while Gavin McLeod took the loss despite making 47 saves.

Glanbrook leads the Bloomfield Division at 35-4-0-2 while Hespeler is assured of an eighth-place finish. The Shamrocks are at 7-30-1-2 with two games to go in their regular season.

If the Rangers finish first in the division they’ll play the Shamrocks in the divisional quarter-finals. The two franchises met in the quarter-finals last season when the Shamrocks were based in Simcoe as the Simcoe Storm. Glanbrook swept the best-of-seven series in four games, outscoring Simcoe 28-6.

Eleven Shamrocks were with the Storm in that playoff series last season – forwards Trevor Ayrton, David Biro, Darrian Morgan, Austin Reilly, Devin Schneider, Austin Slaney, Cameron Tonner and Matthew Tonner, defencemen Ryan Frost and Trevor Wilson and goaltender McLeod.

The Shamrocks are to complete their regular season with an 8:30 p.m. game at home against the fourth-place Niagara RiverHawks (18-15-0-5) Saturday and a 2 p.m. game against the sixth-place Port Dover Sailors (12-22-2-3) at the Port Dover arena Feb. 3 at 2 p.m.
