Shamrocks edged by Peach Kings to begin semifinal

GRIMSBY – The Hespeler Shamrocks surrendered single goals late in the first and third periods as they opened their Provincial Junior Hockey League Bloomfield Division semifinal with the Grimsby Peach Kings with a 2-0 setback Wednesday night at the Peach King Arena.

The hosts, who had swept the regular-season series between the teams, scored with 2:19 to go in the first period and 27 seconds to go in the third.

Dalton White and Dorion Maye scored the goals for Grimsby while Maxime Pleau and Michael Grace each had an assist.

Riley Maskell stopped all 27 shots fired his way to get the shutout for Grimsby. Gavin MacLeod had 26 saves in the Hespeler net.

Penalties were kept to a minimum in the match while neither team netted a power-play goal, Hespeler with three man-advantage situations and Grimsby with two.

Second game of the best-of-seven series is set for Friday at Grimsby. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Shamrocks are to host Game 3 Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.
