
Shamrocks edged in overtime by New Hamburg
BADEN – The Hespeler Shamrocks surrendered a goal in overtime as they were edged 6-5 by the New Hamburg Firebirds in PJHL play Friday night at the Wilmot Recreation Complex.
It was the second game in as many nights between the teams. Doherty Division-leading New Hamburg had blanked the Shamrocks 3-0 at Hespeler Thursday night.

Friday night, New Hamburg needed a natural hat trick (three consecutive goals) by Cole Stannix for the overtime win over the short-staffed Shamrocks. Hespeler had 17 players suited up for the game including both goalies while New Hamburg had the full complement of 20 players.
The Shamrocks led 3-2 at the end of the first period and 5-4 after the second.
Defenceman Ryan Fraser had a hat trick for Hespeler, his first three goals of the season. Mitch Perry and Owen Clarke had the other goals for the Shamrocks while Perry and Mitchell Smilsky each had two assists. Single assists went to Riley Broderick, Gavin Logher, Josh Hillis, Riley Panagapka, Clarke and Jett Spark.
The goals in Stannix’s hat trick were scored in three different periods as he tallied at 14:14 of the second period, 1:15 of the third and 1:37 of overtime. Lucas Jasmins added a pair of goals while Adam Barr also scored. Antonio Pasqualino assisted on three of the goals while Eric Vander Eyk, Anthony Pede, Jake Thompson, Tyler Reid and Owen Fischer each had one assist.
The Firebirds doubled the Shamrocks 46-23 in shots on goal. Both teams had a pair of power play goals, Hespeler’s coming on five power plays and New Hamburg’s on eight.
Tyson Gustaw had 40 saves for the Shamrocks while Griffin Murphy had 18 for New Hamburg.
The Firebirds head the Doherty Division at 26-4-1-2 while the Shamrocks are sixth at 4-24-2-1.
The Shamrocks are to complete their three-in-three Saturday with a game against the second-place Wellesley Applejacks (22-5-2-2) at the Wellesley Community Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Including Saturday’s game, the Shamrocks have 11 games remaining on their regular-season schedule and will finish either fifth, sixth or seventh in the division’s final standings.
