Shamrocks end scoreless stretch in loss to division leaders

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks surrendered three goals in the first period as they were handed a 3-1 setback in Provincial Junior Hockey League play by the Bloomfield Division-leading Glanbrook Rangers Saturday night at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

Glanbrook leads the division at 27-2-0-1 while the Shamrocks are eighth at 4-23-1-1.

Hespeler’s goal by Austin Reilly came on a power play early in the second period and Kyle Wagner and David Biro picked up assists on the play. The goal put an end to a scoreless stretch of 231 minutes and 55 seconds for the Shamrocks who had suffered three consecutive shutout losses and hadn’t scored since the 13:50 mark of the second period in a 4-1 loss to the Dunnville Mudcats Dec. 8.

Lukas VanBerkel, Sandy Ciccarelli Jr. and Keaton Kewley fired home a goal apiece for Glanbrook while Mathew Rimac assisted on two of the goals and Connor McQuhae, Connor Maitz and Jamie Caruso each had one assist.

Glanbrook outshot Hespeler 42-23 and went 1-for-5 on its power play while the Shamrocks were 1-for-2 on their power play.

Gavin McLeod was charged with the loss in the Hespeler net although he made 39 saves. Warren Lament had 22 saves for the win in the Glanbrook net.

The loss stretched Hespeler’s winless streak to 11 games. The Shamrocks have a tie with the Hagersville Hawks in that stretch, but haven’t won since edging the Port Dover Sailors 2-1 Nov. 10.

The Shamrocks have two road games next weekend as they’re to play the seventh-place Dunnville Mudcats (7-17-1-3) at the Dunnville Memorial Arena Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the fifth-place Hagersville Hawks (14-13-2-2) at the Hagersville Arena Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
