Shamrocks fade in loss to Hamilton in home opener

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks yielded four goals in the final eight minutes of their home opener Saturday night at the Hespeler Memorial Arena as they were edged 5-4 by the Hamilton Huskies Junior Blues in Provincial Junior Hockey League play.

The Shamrocks had led 3-0 at the end of the first period before Hamilton scored the lone goal of the second, but Hespeler got that one back early in the third.

Darrian Morgan and Austin Slaney had a goal each for the Shamrocks. Their other scorers were not identified. Getting one assist apiece were Devin Schneider, Austin Reilly, Cameron Tonner and Ben Curtin.

Scott McLaren struck for two goals and two assists for Hamilton while Colin Kuowski, Chris Cudek and Jamieson Buck also scored. Jeff McDonough and Stephen Bell each had one assist.

The Shamrocks outshot Hamilton 41-38.

Hespeler’s goaltender was not identified. Connor Org made 37 saves for the win for Hamilton.

Penalties proved costly in the game as there were five of the goals were power-play markers. Hamilton went 3-for-9 on its power play and Hespeler went 2-for-8.

The Shamrocks have a win and a loss in their two outings in the return of junior C hockey to Hespeler while Hamilton also has a win and a loss.

The Shamrocks are to host the Niagara RiverHawks (1-0-0-0) Saturday at the Hespeler Memorial Arena. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
