Shamrocks fall behind Woodstock after first period

WOODSTOCK – The Hespeler Shamrocks yielded six goals after the first period as they were downed 8-3 by the Woodstock Navy Vets in PJHL play Friday night at the Woodstock District Community Complex.

The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first period, but Woodstock responded with six consecutive goals. The Shamrocks stopped that scoring streak with the game’s final goal with 1:09 to go in the game.

The Navy Vets led 5-2 after the second period.

Alex Spencer, Trent Collins and Owen Clarke had a goal apiece for Hespeler, Spencer and Collins both getting their first goals of the season. Hudson Weger, Clarke and Jack Restauri each had an assist.

Liam VanBradt, Jordan Thomson and Davin Gray had two goals apiece for Woodstock while single goals were added by former Shamrock Tommy Zufelt and Patrick Holloway. Joey Zhang, VanBradt, Ethan Szabo and Jake Phelan each had two assists and Thomson, Jacob McMullen, Zufelt, Gray, Brendan Sullivan, Kyle Ilao and Eric Tuori had one each.

Woodstock outshot Hespeler 40-38 and both teams had six power plays during the game, the Navy Vets scoring on two of them and the Shamrocks failing to get a power-play goal.

Ben Desroches had 32 saves for Hespeler while Tyler Bouck had 35 for Woodstock.

The Navy Vets (10-9-0-1) are fifth in the seven-team Doherty Division while the Shamrocks are sixth at 2-17-1-1.

The two teams are to play again Saturday in Woodstock. Game time is 7:45 p.m.
