Shamrocks get a point for tie with Wellesley

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks picked up their first point of October as they battled the Wellesley Applejacks to a 2-2 standoff in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Sunday at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

The Shamrocks had been beaten in each of their previous four games this month.

The Shamrocks led 1-0 at the end of the first period while all the scoring in the game was complete by the end of the second.

Riley Panagapka scored a pair of power-play goals for Hespeler while Derek Taylor assisted on both. Getting one assist apiece were Gavin Logher and Braeden Tyler.

Patrick Klazer and Matt Brooks scored 4:14 apart for Wellesley in the second period. Assists went to Kyle Baker, Curtis Butler, Connor Bradley and Koby Seiling.

Wellesley outshot the Shamrocks 45-25 although Hespeler held a 7-1 advantage in the seven-minute overtime period. The Shamrocks were 2-for-7 on their power play while the Applejacks were 1-for-6.

Tyson Gustaw had 43 saves for the Shamrocks while Noah Bender had 23 for the Applejacks.

New Hamburg Firebirds lead the Doherty Division standings at 10-0-1-0 while the Tavistock Braves are 9-2-0-0. They’re followed by the Woodstock Navy Vets and Norwich Merchants both at 6-5-0-0, Wellesley at 5-4-1-1, the Shamrocks at 1-8-0-1 and the Paris Mounties at 0-10-1-0.

The Shamrocks are to play the Paris Mounties at the Brant Sports Complex Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
